Family Reunion

August 28th, 2011

Family reunions are all about enjoying extended family… and their dogs.

Of course we also enjoy the location.

You can’t ask for a better backdrop for a church service. (Or better talent.)

What’s more fun than looking around at 80 or so faces and realizing you’re related to everyone…

Spanning four or five generations.

Great memories for the kids.

Literally cousins by the dozens…

First cousins… second cousins… third cousins…

All working diligently on a craft project.

Aunts and Uncles are pretty fun, too.

But nothing beats snuggling with Daddy when you’re tired.

Until next year, Mt. Adams…

Mt. Adams

August 26th, 2011

The last stop on our vacation was near Mt. Adams.

With the exception of last year,  we’ve been camping here at our Family Reunion each year for at least nine years.

And it’s all because of Nana, who happens to come from a big family who generations ago had ties to this mountain.

We took a hike near the base of the mountain,

To an area Nana remembers visiting as a child.

It was filled with beautiful flowers,

Robed in radiant colors.

There were also snow patches to cross, and mosquitoes to slap.

But we were in great company.

And yes, the water was cold.

Though it wasn’t as swift as the White Salmon River where we’d gone white-water rafting the previous day (while Nana graciously watched the girls.)

Unfortunately we don’t have any photos of that invigorating experience.  Just some of Ami lazing in our bed,

And a mysterious sign that showed up one morning while Warren was off fly-fishing.

It was warm enough this year for the girls to enjoy playing in the creek

But not warm enough for Daddy to join them…

It was nice to get to play with cousin Natalie.  Thanks for the stories, Aunt Joanie.

We’re so blessed to have Two “Happy Campers” now… who look forward to next year’s family reunion.

To be continued…

Vacation Fun

August 24th, 2011

Okay, so riding in the car might not be fun.  But it was worth it.

We got to play in Paul and Kathryn’s pool…

And Warren went fly-fishing with his Dad and bro…

Then the girls got more beach time…

While Daddy,

And Mommy,

Got to play in the dunes.

Thanks, Greg and Audrey, for being such fun hosts for a couple of days.

It was great having more Daddy time than usual, too.

Miah always has a winning smile.

Well, who wouldn’t, when you get to play at the beach for three days straight!

Are your lips blue yet?

Then it was off to the lake for the girls’ first boat ride!

Even after a 15-year lapse, Warren made it up on the first try!  Of course.

What more can I say?

These photos speak for themselves.

“Scamping” at The Beach

August 19th, 2011

While on our vacation, we spent a night “scamping” (that’s camping in our Scamp trailer, in case you’re wondering) on the Oregon Coast.

The girls had been looking forward to this for a long time.

Ami had never seen such a giant sandbox!

Miah was quick to shed her shoes.

The ocean is pretty vast for a two-year-old.  Especially at first sight!

Although this is only Miah’s second visit to the ocean, she felt right at home.

Ami still wasn’t sure what to think.

After living 10 years of my life within a few minutes of the Pacific, it was therapeutic to again walk the beach and hear the roar of the waves.  I didn’t realize how much I’d missed it.

Maybe a little sisterly support will help Ami be more adventurous.

That must have done the trick!

Nope.  Still not ready to get those feet wet!

Look who’s having the time of her life!

Miah ran,

And ran,

And ran in the waves.

Ami discovered her footprints.

And did a little running herself.

Before being lured closer to the ocean.

They found great joy in being chased by the waves.

And we found joy in watching them.

“…he who provides the sun to light the day
and the moon and stars to light the night,
and who stirs the sea into roaring waves.
The LORD Almighty is his name:”

~Jeremiah 31:35

Catching Up

August 16th, 2011

We took a short vacation.  (Our first in three years, unless you count last summer’s adoption trip to China.)  Therefore no updates on the blog for the past couple weeks.  Now I’ve got some catching up to do!  One of our stops was our Adoption agency’s (AWAA) annual picnic near Portland.  It was great to get together with families we traveled with, have met before, or just met for the first time.  It seems we all have similar life perspectives and experiences, and friendships form easily.  This snapshot of the girls in the fountain is the ONLY picture I captured this year…  Here is a link from last year.  And the Year before that.

On our trip we had one LONG day of driving from the central Oregon Coast to Mt. Adams in Washington.  We were happy to take a much needed break from driving to stop at the home of AWAA friends.  Ami was able to take her first pony ride!

She was soon ready to get down and play with W who is the same age.

Miah wanted more time on Gizmo, so J led her around,

Then gave Miah a turn at leading.

He’s a very nice pony.  Even allowing sliding dismounts off his rump!

Thank you, Sondra, for the nice visit!  You are in our prayers as you travel back to China SOON for your new daughter!
