The JOY of Christmastime

December 22nd, 2012

Christmas is a special time of year.

Especially when you’re a kid.

Is it the snow that makes it so special?

(We made snow furniture last week instead of a snowman.)

Or is it all the Christmas goodies we get to make

and eat?

Is it the lights?  The presents?  The anticipation?

Getting to sing Christmas carols?  Being with family?

Or is it because we remember that first Christmas, so long ago,

with wise men from afar, and shepherds, and a manger,

and a very special baby, who is the Reason for life itself!

Merry Christmas!

All She Wants for Christmas is…

December 7th, 2012

We’re dreaming of a white Christmas, but we haven’t had any of the lovely white stuff at our elevation for nearly a month!

And that was only for a few hours… but we made the best of it!

Lately, we’ve had a lot more of this ↓ instead.

We had to go Christmas tree hunting in the mountains to satisfy our snow withdrawals.

Success!

Does the tree skirt still fit?

As the Christmas tree skirt shrinks on the girls, I’ve noticed that the ornaments are being placed higher and more evenly on the tree.  There must be a correlation.

What an exciting time of year to be a kid!  The threat of coal in a certain stocking must have worked, because this week has been much more pleasant than last week…  I wonder, does Santa ever deliver teeth?

Apples, Apples, Apples

December 1st, 2012

A couple weeks ago we made apple cider.  One advantage of living in this beautiful valley:  an abundance of apples.

We started the night prior, by moving the apples from the truck into the garage down this handy chute.

Then comes the washing, sorting, and cutting out any bad spots.  This year we used a Fuji Golden combo.

Warren and Alex did all the heavy work with the grinder and press.

The girls were great little helpers, and even better supervisors.

Getting more apples, before taking a recess with the big kids.

Another important step in the process is filling the jugs.

And then the final product!  Oops, I guess this is the wrong photo, but you get the idea.  Miah was even a good helper 5 years ago!
