Visiting the Big Island

March 16th, 2014

3.10

Our long overdue family vacation finally took place, and it was worth the wait.

3.4H

As we anticipated, the girls adapted easily to island life, and would have been happy to stay there indefinitely.

3.4HA

They enjoy playing in cold water, so of course they took to the warm water.  Every day.  Seven days in a row!

3.5s1

Miah immediately figured out boogie boarding.  She barely stopped long enough to eat lunch before she was at it again.

3.5s

Ami had a grand time, too.  But she needed frequent breaks to warm up.

3.5a

I was happy to stay cool under the umbrella.

3.9

It was actually very pleasant.  Not as hot as Guam.

3.5m

Our hosts treated us well. Their home is lovely, and the landscaping beautiful.  It was a treat to have so much fresh fruit each day.  A perfect setting to commemorate Miah’s referral anniversary!  Seven years ago… Wow!

 3.5

We stopped to view a lava tunnel along the road while heading to the beach.

3.6v

We walked through one later when we were near Kilauea Volcano.

3.6v4

We even saw some Nenes off the side of the road after viewing this sign.

3.6n

The volcano wasn’t as exciting as the girls anticipated, but the depictions of the goddess Pele intrigued them.

  3.6v1

I guess I didn’t get a picture of them plugging their noses from the sulfur smell.  Ami didn’t want me taking her picture.

3.6v2

On the other hand, Miah had fun sticking her face in front of the camera.

3.6v3

We saw several turtles (honu) at the black sand beach, and we also saw them while snorkeling.

3.6

It was so nice to snorkel again after so many years.

3.10a

I’m glad the girls had the opportunity to try it.

3.9c

They should have lots of good memories from this trip.

3.9m

It was also a treat to watch the dolphins playing, and see whales breaching and spouting.

3.9s

Ami’s favorite treat was most likely the shaved ice.

3.10f

We all thought the sunsets were pretty spectacular.

3.4H1

A great way to start and end our vacation.
